Practical Nursing Program’s New Student Officers
Student nominees were presented and the campaigning began (for only a week). On election day the candidates were given the opportunity to discuss their attributes and goals if elected. Using confidential paper ballots, the tally began and then the announcement was made. Winning the election for President was Kristi Martin and for Secretary was Julie Rice. Leading the class at their meetings, the new officers are reviewing community service projects, a newsletter to “spotlight” nursing students and other “news”, as well as joining HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America). Both Kristi and Julie appreciate the vote of confidence from their peers and look forward to a successful year. Congratulations to the new officers!

PN Students Experience Fire Safety
EBC-Practical Nursing Students worked with Select Specialty Hospital Staff to assist in a mock fire drill. The students, Alexis Pierce and Kayla Brooks, were placed in patient rooms and given scenarios of the type of patients they were to portray. The alarm was pulled and the staff worked to take the student patients to safety. Kayla was a patient with extremely limited mobility and a lift was used to get her safely from the fire zone.

Nursing Students Recognize Community Needs
EBC’s Practical Nursing Students gave back to the community by collaborating with the Community Blood Bank. The Blood drive was held May 7, 2008 at Erie Business Center using the theme “Be a Hero”. The class president, Alexis Pierce with the help of Nicole Beer and the Nursing Students designed posters and interested twenty-two students and faculty to donate blood. The nursing students assisted the Blood Bank representatives by guiding the donators through the process. This was the largest number of participants for the school in several years. Congratulations for another successful effort by the student practical nurses.

Celebrating Nursing
The Practical Nursing Students at EBC celebrated Nurses’ Week with guest speakers, Sharon Yost, Director of Bayada Nurses. and Kelly Rivera, RN-Bayada Nursing Supervisor, on May 8 at the EBC PN learning center. Sharon discussed information on attitude, mannerisms, and appropriate attire for interviewing. She discussed the importance of getting the most out of their education and encouraged them to be life-long learners.
Kelly reviewed a form that is given to new employees to evaluate skill levels and which refresher courses may be required to be able to meet the needs of Bayada clients. She encouraged the students to accept positions in their areas of interest that fulfill their goals and offer growth potential.
