August commencement at the Erie Maennerchor Club
Graduating EBC students received associate in specialized business (ASB) degrees or diplomas at EBC’s August commencement. The event was held Thursday, August 20, at the Erie Maennerchor Club with a 6 p.m. ceremony followed by a reception for graduates, families, friends, faculty and administration. The commencement speaker was DaWayne Cleckley, owner of StellarMediaWorks. Valedictorian Lori Meisel also addressed those in attendance, while Helen Wolf, Lurdes Caraballo, and Keven McQueeney were selected to lead various portions of the commencement exercise. Outstanding Student Recognition awards were presented to Adam Summerville (Information Technology), Lurdes Caraballo (Medical Assistant) and Richard Ketchum (Paralegal). Congratulations, graduates!

Congratulations Practical Nursing Grads!
Graduating EBC Practical Nursing Program students received their diplomas at the August 3 commencement ceremony. The event was held at the Erie Maennerchor Club with a 6 p.m. ceremony followed by a reception for graduates, families, friends, faculty and administration. The commencement speaker was Beverly Fetzner, founder, owner, and president of Comfort Care and Resources, Incorporated. Valedictorian Julie Rice also addressed those in attendance and leading various portions of the commencement exercise were Ebony Chisholm, Kristin Martin, and Jason White. The Outstanding Student Recognition award was presented to Connie Coverdale. Congratulations, graduates!

Information Technology and Pies??
The Information Technology program students smashed lots of pies as one of the fund raisers for their trip to Las Vegas to attend the DEFCON Security Conference. Faculty and administration “willingly and not-so-willingly volunteered” to be targets. Congratulations June Nurse Aide Graduates
Six students of EBC’s Nurse Aide Program attended the June 25th graduation and pinning ceremony and received their certificates of completion and nurse aide pins. Attending the ceremony at the school were Michelle Coon, Student Services Administrator; Lucia Bonaminio, Instructor, and Donna Perino, Director of the Erie Campus. The graduates are: David Bilinski, Ronald Cromer, Alisha Lightinger, Jennifer Loesel, Roxanne Roberts, Chelsea Strom. Congratulations, graduates!

Community Resources Day
On May 14, students, faculty, and staff enjoyed pizza and most importantly meeting with representatives from the Crime Victim Center, Erie United Methodist Alliance, and Catholic Charities. The Crime Victim Center of Erie County, Inc. has been serving the area since 1973 and it covers areas such as sexual harassment, assault, and identity theft. Angela Porfilio, Director of Development, talked with students about the services provided by this agency. Michele Knauer, Project WIN Caseworker, from Catholic Charities provided information on the counseling services provided by her agency (individual, family, couple, drug and alcohol, gambling, adoption, as well as refugee and resettlement services, and pregnancy services).Melissa Thompson, Coordinator of Social Services, Erie United Methodist Alliance, discussed the alliance which was founded in 1888. Part of the alliance, The Rainbow Connection Thrift Store, provides coordination of all donations such as clothing and small household items which are provided free to clients and others in the community or at prices lower than most thrift stores. The Refuge, is a 28 bed emergency shelter for homeless families with children – during a 30-45 day stay, the families are provided with basic necessities and services such as assessment, counseling, and case management. EBC conducted a clothing drive and provided donations to Melissa on this day.

Maternal Child Health Speaker
On May 22, 2009, Rozlyn Cidor, RN, met with the Practical Nursing Program Students. Rozlyn has been a nurse in the neonatal intensive care unit at St. Vincent Health Center for the past five years with a background in mother/baby nursing. During her presentation, she spoke of the importance of post partum care and detailed the assessment and care for mom and baby. She demonstrated a complete assessment and explanation of a newborn and what type of difficulties may be encountered. She also provided critical pathways and explained how to use them. The students were very attentive and appreciated Rozlyn’s presentation.

Home Health Speaker
On May 8, 2009, Stephanie Link, RN, a representative from Care Unlimited Nursing Agency visited with the Practical Nursing Program students. Stephanie presented the pros and cons, what home health can offer, and the different areas that make up the field. Students were very appreciative of the time she spent with them answering questions and explaining what they can expect when they graduate and look for employment.

Students and Faculty Volunteer at the Uht
On April 29, students in the Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management major and faculty members volunteered to cook and serve food to fans, run the cash registers and assist in the fun zone. Enjoying the day’s activities were students Charlene Marhoefer, Amy Lowe, Kara Lowe, Fred Hayes, Josh McGraw, Kathy Frazzini, Kristan Kupniewski, Shanka Jones, Jared Crissman, and Joe Currier and faculty members Becky Graham and Kevin Arrington. More community service volunteering projects are planned for the future.

Congratulations April ‘09 Graduates

The commencement speaker was Tabitha Jones, 2003 EBC graduate and Director of Sales for the Bel-Aire Clarion Hotel and Conference Center. Valedictorians Amy Gollmer (Accounting Program) and Michael Burlingame (Information Technology) also addressed those in attendance, while Amber Christensen (Accounting Program), Darryl Crosby (Marketing and Management Program) and Heather Edmonds (Medical Assistant Program) were selected to lead various portions of the commencement exercise. Outstanding Student Recognition awards were presented to Amy Gollmer and Amber Christensen (Accounting Program), Darryl Crosby (Marketing and Management Program), Barbara Abbott (Administrative Office Professional), Christopher Pietsch (Information Technology Program) and Heather Edmonds and Jenida Hazlett-Rollie (Medical Assistant Program). ServSafe Award Night
At an award ceremony and reception at EBC, students of the HRIM program received their ServSafe certificates. These students are striving to become managers and owners of restaurants and hotels. When owning and managing a restaurant, there are several state requirements that must be followed. One of the PA state requirements is that one person in a restaurant at any given time must be ServSafe certified. EBC students Joe Currier, Kathy Frazzini, Kristen Kupniewski, Kara Lowe and Devan Mitchell sat for the test and are now certified. Their instructor, Becky Graham, commented “I am so very proud of my students and their accomplishments. Hats off to all of you and keep working toward your goals . . . because all that hard work will pay off.” Congratulations everyone!

Bowl for Kids Sake
Erie Business Center staff and faculty participated in the Bowl for Kids Sake! 2009 event at Greengarden Lanes on April 17. Staff members included Erica Coulter, Michelle Coon and Tiffany Parker; faculty members included Becky Graham, Kevin Arrington and Lucia Bonaminio. The team raised $350 in donations for Family Services of Northwest Pennsylvania in support of Big Brothers Big Sisters. Way to go, Team!!!

Rehab Techs Tour Clinical Practice
Rehabilitation Technician students toured the facilities of Chiropractic Physician James Loeslein. The students had the opportunity to observe rehabilitative techniques including stabilization exercises, use of ultrasound and electrical stimulation and flexibility exercises. Students on this tour included Luis Pagan, Katelynn Wheeler and Tiffany Rupp.

Spelling Bee
Participating in this year’s Corporate Spelling Bee at Junior’s Last Laugh Comedy Club on March 31 were: Carrie Kennedy, Director – Business Programs, Paul Pilatowski, Director – Admissions, and Brett Wiler, Admissions Representative. All proceeds from the event help support Books for Kids and WQLN Education. The team did very well and is looking forward to next year’s event.

Another Success Story
EBC 2005 graduate, Jason Salvaggio, discussed his professional successes
with the current student body on February 25. Jason graduated from the
Marketing and Management Program and while attending EBC worked at Cycle
City creating marketing materials and developing promotions. Upon
graduating from EBC, Jason accepted the Assistant Marketing Director
position at The Millcreek Mall. There he continued to develop marketing
materials and creative original promotions. During his presentation,
Jason announced that he had accepted a new position as Marketing Manager
of Urban Xperience Magazine, a new publication in the Erie area.
