    EBC Selects Exceptional Students
Five Erie Business Center students have been selected as Exceptional Day Students for academic achievement among full-time students enrolled in EBC's day program. Three additional EBC students are being honored as Exceptional Evening Students based on academic achievement among full-time students of EBC's evening program.

Cindy Senger of Millcreek is the recipient of the August Day Student Award. Cindy is in her third semester, pursuing a diploma in Personal Computers for Business. Married and the mother of three children and grandmother of one, Cindy decided to attend college now that her children are grown. She says she hopes to pass the certification tests in Microsoft Office and find a job that she will enjoy.

Lisa Zamierowski of Erie is the recipient of the August Exceptional Evening Student Award. This is Lisa's fifth semester at EBC. She is working to complete her course of study in Personal Computers for Business next semester. Lisa is employed at Marquette Savings Bank as an Assistant Vice President and Assistant Manager and Loan Officer at the Liberty Street Office. She says her decision to attend EBC has greatly assisted her in obtaining a higher level of job performance. (Photo unavailable.)

Vicky Kaltenbach of Erie was chosen Exceptional Day Student for July. Now in her sixth semester, Vicky is pursuing a degree in Business Administration: Accounting. She is the treasurer of Boy Scouts Pack 134 and a member of Lakewood United Methodist Church. Vicky enjoys biking, creating scrapbooks, reading, camping and spending time with her three children.

John Kreger of Erie was honored with the Exceptional Day Student Award for the month of June. John is also in his second semester, pursuing a degree in Business Administration: Accounting.

Glenn Shaffer of Union City was selected as Exceptional Evening Student for the month of June. Now in his final semester at EBC, Glenn has focused on two areas of study: Computer Information Specialist and Network Administrator. During his free time, Glenn enjoys working with anything mechanical--cars, motorcycles and, of course, computers--as well as woodworking. Single and self-employed as a consultant, he says he would welcome the opportunity to work for an established business.

Steve Bernsley was chosen Exceptional Day Student for the month of May. Steve is in his second semester at EBC, pursuing a degree in Business Administration: Marketing and Management. He enjoys playing football and basketball. His career goal is to manage or own his own business.

Christy Ledlow of Conneaut was honored as Exceptional Evening Student for the month of May. Christy is now in her final semester at EBC. In addition to focusing on her Computer Information Specialist studies, she stays busy watching her two children play sports. Christy says she has enjoyed her time at EBC and believes her education will help her achieve her employment goals. (Photo unavailable.)

Eugene Metzger of Erie was selected as Exceptional Day Student for the month of April. Eugene is in his fourth term at EBC, pursuing a degree in Business Administration: Accounting. Originally, Eugene wanted to be a musician, and he played the drums when he was younger. Today, he says he enjoys traveling, blues and rock music, the theater and helping others. He is the father of four. Eugene says he would like to graduate with the best grades possible and get a good job in the Erie area.

Student Services Coordinator "Sent To Slammer." Bail Helps M.O.D.
Student Services Coordinator Trish Staszewski "served time" in mid-September for the March of Dimes during its annual Jail and Bail campaign. One of the March of Dimes best-known special events, Jail & Bail brings together community leaders, business people and area residents for a common causeÜpreventing birth defects and infant mortality.

Some jailbirds are escorted from their places of business by volunteer police officers, but Trish went voluntarily to National City Bank on Eighth and State Streets, where the event took place. There, she was escorted into a mock jail and sentenced to spend one hour in the slammer to raise bail in the form of contributions to the March of Dimes. Thanks to everyone who donated during the two-day campaign in an effort to free Trish. Your generosity is appreciated. Students, Faculty, Staff Represent EBC At GECAC Dinner
EBC students, faculty and staff enjoyed the 33rd Annual GECAC Dinner celebration held at the Zem Zem Shrine Club on Friday, Sept. 5. Attending were Sheila Overton, Samantha Gregory, Rob Eggleston, Joanie and Dave Knobloch, and Donna and Sam Perino. Lavita Johnson, Executive Secretary of GECAC, hosted the event as Mistress of Ceremonies, while R. Benjamin Wiley, Chief Executive Officer, presented the awards. Ulice Payne, Jr., President and CEO of the Milwaukee Brewers Baseball Club and guest speaker, offered insights into his personal philosophy. The event is held annually to acknowledge those who work in the Erie community to help eliminate poverty and promote human dignity.

District Justice Explores Ethics at EBC
Suzanne Mack, former Executive Director of Crossroads and current District Justice of the 1st Ward, spoke at EBC in mid-July about the importance of conducting business ethically and responsibly. Describing the code of ethics as "a living, breathing document that must change as needs dictate," District Justice Mack described how she and her staff developed such a document for Crossroads. She then summarized first the law that governs a candidate's ethical conduct during a judicial campaign and then the Pennsylvania Rules for District Justices that monitors the standards of conduct of district justices, once elected.

Mack concluded her fascinating presentation by discussing some of the ethical challenges that face all of us, in and out of the business arena. In business as in other arenas of our life, Mack noted, it is important for us to develop moral wisdom and moral courage: wisdom to recognize when an ethical problem arises, as well as to make sound decisions in situations of moral conflict; and the courage to do what we know is right even when there are strong pressures or incentives to do otherwise.
