Hamot
Professionals Share Insights With Medical Program Students
The
Clinical Procedures I Class welcomed three guest speakers from Hamot
Health Systems in early April The speakers were Sara Dolph, a recruiter
in the human resources department; Laurie Snider, administrator
of Hamot's primary care network, and Sue Tombaugh a clinical nurse
educator with the primary care network. Their presentation covered
the types of positions available at Hamot for medical assistants
and the hiring and training process that prospective employees can
expect to go through. The speakers gave the students a behind-the-scenes
look at the types of individuals they are seeking and the criteria
they use in screening applicants. The information they shared provided
a great overview of what EBC graduates will experience once they
have completed their programs of study.

Attorney
Addresses Criminal Law in EBC Visit
Attorney Patrick Carey spoke on the topic of Criminal Law Procedure to the Legal
Office Procedures Class at EBC in mid-February. Carey is an associate attorney
with the law firm of Marshall, Dennehey, Warner, Coleman and Goggin, where he
handles a wide variety of civil matters, including personal injury, property
damage, liquor liability, civil rights, motor vehicle, municipal liability, professional
malpractice and product liability cases.
Carey previously
served as an Erie County assistant district attorney with responsibility
for litigating a range of crimes, including major felony offenses.
He successfully prosecuted two first-degree, one second-degree and
two third-degree murder offenses. Carey's presentation was well
received by EBC students, who asked a variety of thought-provoking
questions. In the next Legal Office Procedures Class following the
presentation, student comments ranged from, "I was impressed by
his knowledge of criminal law" to "It was at a level we understood,
but he didn't make us feel that he was talking down to us." One
student observed that, "He was so enthusiastic; I think he misses
criminal law."
Tourism
Director Shares Experiences with EBC Students
John Oliver, executive director of the Erie Area Convention and Visitors Bureau,
made a guest presentation to the TT250 Travel and Tour Services class at EBC
in late January. Oliver told students about growing up in the Niagara Falls area
and earning his degree in travel and tourism. He also described his jobs in the
industry before, during and after receiving his degree.
Oliver really caught
the attention of the students when he showed pictures of what looked
like the Daytona 500, the East Coast shoreline, Napa Valley and
a Colorado ski scene. He then pointed out in his presentation that
all of the pictures had been taken in and around the Erie area at
Lake Erie Speedway, Presque Isle, North East wineries and Peak n
Peak. The presentation was a great way to persuade the students
to see just what Erie has to offer to tourists. At the conclusion
of his presentation, Oliver answered student questions covering
a range of topics, including the future of local tourism, jobs,
recreational activities, transportation and the daily routine of
those employed at the convention and visitors bureau.
