EBC's New Nurse Aide Program: A Quick Route To A Rewarding Career

It's one of the fastest growing occupations in the nation today. Between now and 2012, the need for nurse aides is expected to grow by as much as 35%, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics. And now EBC has a program to help individuals take advantage of that growing opportunity.

Through the new certificate program, students gain the knowledge and skills to become nurse aides in just eight weeks of training. Classroom instruction and lab work focus on the role and function of a nurse aide, including communication, infection control, safety/emergency measures, residents' rights, personal care and basic nursing skills. Students then have the opportunity to demonstrate and develop the skills they've learned through practical experience as nurse aide trainees at area health care facilities.

Typical entry-level wages for nurse aide positions are $8 to $14 per hour. Students hired by longterm care facilities can be reimbursed through Medicare for the cost of their tuition. EBC can assist students with educational loan application. For more information about the Nurse Aide Certificate Program, e-mail us or call our Admissions Department at 814/456-7504.

    Scholarship Opportunities For EBC Students

Erie Business Center has been working to identify new scholarship opportunities for its students. To learn more about any of the following programs, go to scholarships.

The Goodwine Scholarship is a local fund administered by the Erie Community Foundation for students chosen on the basis of academic ability and financial need. The Imagine America Scholarship is a national program established by the Career College Foundation to assist students seeking career college educations. The Imagine Military Award program is a program of the Career College Foundation that makes scholarship funds available to military personnel pursuing postsecondary career education. Through each of these funds, EBC is able to award up to five scholarships every year in amounts up to $5,000 each, depending on whether the student is pursuing an ASB degree or shorter-term diploma program.

Three additional scholarships are available to EBC students through the Erie Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO. To be eligible for a $750 award, a student must be a union member, the dependent child of a union member or a grandchild residing in the home of a union member in good standing of a local union affiliated with the Labor Council. The Theo Sabin Meyer Memorial Scholarship and Thomas D. Melms Memorial Scholarship I are available to graduating high school seniors, while the Thomas D. Melms Memorial Scholarship II is designed for students pursuing continuing education.
