ASB Degrees


Accounting

The Accounting program at Erie Business Center is designed to provide students with a comprehensive study of accounting. You will take courses in tax accounting, cost accounting, business finance and automated accounting. These specialized courses are combined with a study of business and management.

Accounting graduates are prepared for careers as bookkeepers, payroll clerks, accounts receivable and payable clerks, and accounting support staff.

As an Accounting graduate entering the field, you should be able to:
  • Understand the terminology used in the accounting profession.
  • Handle all aspects of double-entry bookkeeping for service and merchandising enterprises using both periodic and perpetual systems.
  • Prepare the financial statements for service and merchandising enterprises.
  • Account for petty cash funds, change funds and bank reconciliation.
  • Account for receivables, writing off accounts and discounting notes.
  • Cost inventory under FIFO, LIFO and Average Cost inventory methods (both periodic and perpetual systems covered for FIFO and LIFO).
  • Estimate inventory under the gross profit and retail methods.
  • Calculate depreciation expense under these methods: straight line, units of production and double declining balance.
  • Record disposals of plant assets--similar and dissimilar exchanges.
  • Compute and record the payroll of a firm.
  • Account for corporations: computing dividends per share; recording transactions involving common stock, preferred stock and treasury stock; preparing the stockholders' equity section of the balance sheet, and appropriating retained earnings.
  • Account for deferred income taxes and special items on the income statement.
  • Account for raw materials, factory overhead and direct labor in a manufacturing setting.
  • Account for personal taxable and non-taxable income in preparing a personal income tax return.


Administrative Office Professional

The importance of the professional administrative assistant is increasing as the business world becomes more complex. Through this program, Erie Business Center educates students to become skilled employees who can contribute to the overall effectiveness of an office.

Courses in this program include keyboarding, word processing, advanced formatting, computer applications and electronic office procedures. Additional classes in accounting, business law, management and technical writing provide a solid business background for the student.

The graduate of this program, ready to enter a career with a local organization, should be able to demonstrate the following skills in an efficient and timely manner:
  • Apply principles of records management.
  • Process incoming and outgoing mail and shipments.
  • Use proper telephone procedures.
  • Operate various types of office equipment.
  • Perform basic accounting functions.
  • Maintain appointment records and receive office visitors.
  • Conduct research and prepare reports.
  • Plan, design, build and maintain spreadsheets.
  • Plan, design, create and maintain databases. Organize, select and sort data. Generate forms, reports and queries based on the information in a database.
  • Create, format, edit, save and print documents such as letters, memos, reports and tables; perform mail merges.
  • Transcribe dictated material.
  • Plan, facilitate and follow up on meetings and conferences.
  • Make travel arrangements.
  • Maintain a web site.
  • Create and deliver multimedia presentations.
  • Demonstrate effective communication techniques.
  • Demonstrate interpersonal and time management skills.
  • Promote good human relations internally and externally.

Information Technology

The Information Technology program is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary for positions that involve the coding of web and desktop applications, installing and troubleshooting of networks and responding to end-user problems. This program prepares the student for entry into the computer field through instruction and hands-on lab participation to gain knowledge of standard computer concepts and procedures. Students completing this program are also prepared for the Microsoft Certified Professional exams 70-270 and 70-290 as well as CompTIA exams 220-232 (A+OS), 220-231 (A+Core), N10-003 (Net+) and SYS-101 (Security+).



Marketing and Management

The Marketing and Management curriculum will introduce you to various aspects of modern marketing: personal selling, advertising, promotion and public relations. Emphasis is placed on developing basic marketing and management techniques through courses in consumer and organizational behavior, advertising, oral communications and small business management.

As an Erie Business Center graduate of this program, you should be prepared to enter the business arena in retail sales, manufacturing representation, or insurance or advertising sales.

The graduate entering a Marketing Management career should be able to:
  • Complete the full selling process from pre-approach to close.
  • Present a comprehensive analysis of a researched problem and answer questions posed by audience members.
  • Work effectively on a team as both a leader and player.
  • Understand and adapt to the personalities and behaviors of co-workers and clients.
  • Understand how a small business is established and operated.
  • Project a price for a product based on market trends and internal research.
  • Understand how economic and market forces cause changes in consumers' wants and needs.
  • Relate to consumers' environments and adapt a promotional mix and personal selling strategy to suit those consumers.
  • Write and present marketing, advertising and overall business plans.
  • Design and implement a promotional strategy for any product, including an advertising plan, sales promotions, a personal selling strategy and publicity.
  • Design an ad to appeal to consumers' wants and needs.
  • Create a layout of an ad, including logo, copy, headline, etc.
  • Utilize computer skills effectively to create PowerPoint presentations.


Medical Assistant

The Medical Assistant program is designed to provide individuals with the knowledge and skills to perform administrative and clinical office procedures competently. Through course work and laboratory practice, you will develop the skills essential to the efficient operation of a medical office. Emphasis is placed on client interaction and communication, teaching and documentation.

In addition to classroom training, you will participate in an internship of practical experience with a cooperating facility in the area. Job opportunities for medical assistants may exist in general and specialized medical practices, health care clinics, hospitals and dialysis centers.

Upon completion of the Medical Assistant program, you should have the skills necessary to:
  • Apply legal and ethical principles to the provision of client care in varied settings.
  • Assist with management of a medical practice's finances (maintaining accounting records, processing payroll).
  • Perform basic clerical functions in the office setting (scheduling, typing, answering telephones and performing receptionist duties).
  • Provide client care using infection control procedures.
  • Assist with quality assurance for client care.
  • Collect and process diagnostic specimens.
  • Provide assistance to clinical staff in the area of triage.
  • Obtain client history and vital signs.
  • Prepare and administer medications.
  • Assist the physician, nurse practitioner or physician assistant with examinations, procedures and treatments.
  • Complete and maintain accurate client health records.
  • Utilize appropriate communication skills for the individual client.
Upon completion of the Medical Assistant program, graduates are qualified to take the certification exam for Registered Medical Assistant (RMA), given by the American Medical Technologists (AMT) organization.


Medical Secretary

This program is designed to give students strong secretarial skills in keyboarding, word processing, advanced formatting, computer applications and electronic office procedures along with a thorough medical background.

By combining secretarial skills with medical terminology, anatomy and physiology as well as medical office management, you should be well-prepared to enter the medical secretarial field.

The graduate of this program, ready to enter a career with a local organization, should be able to demonstrate the following skills in an efficient and timely manner:
  • Apply principles of records management.

Medical Transcription

This program is designed to give students high-quality training in medical terminology and medical formatting. You will have the opportunity to transcribe medical reports, consultations, letters, memos, admissions notes, operative reports and diagnostic studies.

The graduate of this program, ready to enter a career with a local organization, should be able to demonstrate the following skills in an efficient and timely manner:
  • Transcribe in different format styles, such as chart notes, letters, history and physical examinations, consultations and discharge summaries.
  • Transcribe dictations related to different medical specialties, including cardiology, dermatology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, neurology, obstetrics and gynecology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, otorhinolaryngology, pulmonary medicine, radiology and urology.
  • Recognize and use medical abbreviations.
  • Be knowledgeable in the use of drugs, drug categories, and generic and trade name drugs.
  • Use medical terminology accurately (spelling and use).
  • Transcribe with speed and accuracy.
  • Apply principles of records management.
  • Operate various types of office equipment.
  • Use proper telephone techniques.
  • Maintain appointment records and receive office visitors.
  • Plan, design, build and maintain spreadsheets.
  • Plan, design, create and maintain databases. Organize, select and sort data. Generate forms, reports and queries based on the information in a database.

Paralegal

The Paralegal program is designed to prepare individuals for entry-level positions assisting legal professionals in traditional law offices and firms as well as government and corporate settings. In such environments, the individual performs duties under the supervision of an attorney.

This program also prepares the student to work in settings, both public and private, where legal knowledge, analysis, research and critical thinking skills are of value.

The graduate of this program, ready to enter a career with a local organization, should be able to demonstrate the following skills in an efficient and timely manner:
  • Conduct legal research.
  • Demonstrate and apply understanding of legal terminology.
  • Prepare and file legal documents.
  • Complete various legal forms (civil cover sheets, ARD requests and HUD-1's) with attorney input.
  • Prepare drafts of various complaints, wills, deeds and pleadings.
  • Interview and communicate with clients.
  • Assist in preparation for depositions.
  • Apply legal analysis skills.
  • Assist attorneys in adversarial, regulatory and administrative proceedings.
  • Create multimedia presentations for use in the courtroom.
  • Understand the principles of confidentiality in a private, public or judicial office setting.
  • Understand the professional and ethical limits of paralegal duties.
