Diploma Programs
Executive Secretary
This program is designed to provide students with knowledge and skills in word
processing, keyboarding, spreadsheet development, desktop publishing,
machine transcription and professional office procedures with an emphasis on
communication skills. Graduates of this program will be prepared to function
effectively in any of the following roles: executive secretary, receptionist,
secretary, office assistant, administrative support personnel, office clerk,
customer service staff member or clerk/typist.
A graduate of the Executive Secretary program, ready to enter into a career with
a local organization, should be able to demonstrate the following skills in an
efficient and timely manner:
- Apply principles of records management.
- Process incoming and outgoing mail and shipments.
- Use proper telephone procedures.
- Operate various types of office equipment.
- Maintain appointment records and receive office visitors.
- Plan, design, build and maintain spreadsheets.
- Create, format, edit, save and print documents such as letters, memos,
reports, tables; perform mail merges.
- Utilize multimedia software to prepare professional presentations.
- Transcribe dictated material.
- Plan, facilitate and follow up on meetings and conferences.
- Make travel arrangements.
- Maintain a web site.
- Promote good human relations internally and externally.
Home Health Aide
The Home Health Aide program is designed to prepare students to work effectively in the home health care industry. The program provides
instruction and skills development necessary for individuals to provide
high-quality, personal care, ensure clients' rights, undertake safety and emergency
measures as needed, follow infection control processes, act
with professionalism and demonstrate good communication. Instruction
includes theory and lab work. Externship opportunities are available.
Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management
The Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management diploma program provides hospitality-specific
courses enriched by additional required courses that give students a solid understanding
of management principles and processes.
The curriculum covers selling techniques, computer reservation systems, management
and human resource skills, destination geography, legal aspects related to hospitality
services, food service and professionalism. Hands-on classroom experience and
hotel computer simulations prepare students to compete professionally in this
specialized yet diversified field.
A graduate of the program entering the field should be able to:
- Understand the history, current trends and future of the hospitality industry.
- Understand hospitality services and management.
- Perform computations using food and beverage operating ratios and yield management.
- Perform front-of-house and back-of-house operations.
- Use security and loss prevention procedures.
- Be familiar with POS terminals and the CRS.
- Identify characteristics and trends in health care, business and industry,
elementary and secondary school, college and university, and recreational and
leisure industry food service.
- Practice food safety.
- Understand responsible service of alcoholic beverages.
- Recognize the differences between meetings, expositions and conventions.
- Understand major hospitality industry terminology.
Medical Coding/Billing
This program is designed to prepare students for a career in medical coding and/or
billing in various health care settings. This multi-skilled health care professional
is cross-trained in medical coding and insurance billing.
Job opportunities may exist in hospitals, clinics, outpatient surgery centers,
medical offices, management services organizations (MSOs) and home-based businesses.
Upon completion of the Medical Coding/Billing program, you should be able to:
- Understand medical terminology and health care diagnosis.
- Perform procedural and diagnostic coding.
- Understand and apply third-party reimbursement for services provided to
clients.
- Assist the employer in legally and ethically obtaining reimbursement through
accurate claims submissions.
- Understand and abide by the requirements of managed care policies and procedures.
- Assist the employer in maintaining quality assurance of medical claims/billing
forms.
- Practice procedures as assigned, legally and ethically.
Nurse Aide
The Nurse Aide program trains individuals to provide nursing or nursing-related
services to residents of nursing facilities. The student receives instruction
focusing on the role and function of a nurse aide, including communication,
infection control, safety/emergency measures, residents’ rights, personal
care and basic nursing skills. Overviews of restorative care, mental health
issues, social services needs and care of cognitively impaired residents are
also presented.
Instruction includes class participation, lab work and clinical time within
a nursing facility. Upon completion of the program, the student will be eligible
to take the Nurse Aide Competency Examination by the Pennsylvania Department
of Education and be placed on the state’s registry.
Practical Nursing
Through EBC’s Practical Nursing Program, students receive classroom
and laboratory instruction as well as clinical experience in providing nursing
care. The program is designed to provide students with the skills necessary
to obtain entry-level practical nursing employment in hospital settings, physicians’ offices,
clinical settings, nursing homes, home health care services, residential care
facilities, schools, temporary help agencies and/or government agencies.
Located at 252 West 11th Street, the program incorporates curriculum focused
on caring for people with illnesses, injuries and disabilities under the direction
of physicians and registered nurses. Students receive clinical experience at
Erie area health care and nursing facilities and have access to an exclusive
online tutorial that provides practice examinations, content enrichment and
nationally standardized tests, among other features.
The primary objective of the program is to provide students with the skills
and knowledge necessary to pass a licensing examination (the NCLEX-PN) after
completion of the program. Students also receive instruction in the interdisciplinary
components of practical nursing.
Upon completion of the Practical Nursing Program, graduates should be able
to:
- Use medical terminology, abbreviations and symbols.
- Have a basic knowledge of medications.
- Perform standard procedures such as dressing changes, intravenous management,
laboratory blood draws and collection of body fluids.
- Complete ethical and confidential patient charting, monitor vital signs
and distribute prescribed medications.
- Collaborate with ancillary staff on patient care matters to provide the
best nursing care possible.
- Act in a compassionate, caring manner toward patients and their families.
Rehabilitation Technician
The Rehabilitation Technician program prepares students to enter the rehabilitation
therapy industry as a technician, providing knowledge and skills through lecture
and hands-on instruction in therapeutic techniques.
Rehabilitation technicians typically work
in hospitals, clinics, chiropractice offices, assisted living communities and medical equipment companies.
They may also work as home health aides and personal care aides. General duties involve transferring patients, preparing treatment areas, maintaining
supplies, and assisting with training exercises.
A graduate of the program, ready to enter into a career as a rehab technician,
should have the skills necessary to:
- Promote asepsis and infection control.
- Prepare and transfer patients from standing and sitting positions, including
from bathtubs and wheelchairs.
- Turn and position patients.
- Assist with ambulation using crutches, canes and walkers.
- Perform therapeutic exercises such as range of motion, passive range of motion
and measurement of muscle strength.
- Identify and assist the therapist with the application of therapy agents and
treatment modalities such as ultrasound, massage, traction, hot and cold therapy,
and electrical stimulation.
- Identify and demonstrate precautions for common surgeries and treatments for
medical disorders.
